I have John 3:16 tattooed on my arm as well as a rendering of Jesus on the cross. I’ve had it for 8 years and have become so accustomed to seeing it that it’s almost like it isn’t there, however i’ve been staring at it a lot recently, reciting the verse in my head and contemplating what it means.
“God loves the world so much that He sent His only Son, so that whoever believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life.”
I chose this specific verse because I felt it adequately sums up Jesus’ death on the cross.
They say it’s the most well known verse of the Bible. Though this verse is so burnt into my memory that I will never forget it, I still find that it’s deeper than I could ever imagine.
God came to earth and died (Sacrificed Himself willingly) so that I can be restored to Him.
Jesus was capable of having whatever He wanted. He could have conquered the world by force and set Himself up as King. He could have had money, fame, women or power but instead He put it all off for one purpose, the Sacrifice.
In the beginning God created man. He created us perfect but we sinned, we fell. The punishment of this sin was death, physical and spiritual. We are so important to God that instead of letting us die and perish, He enacted a plan that would save us, redeem us, forgive us, heal us. His plan was the sacrifice! He chose to die in our place so that whoever trusts in Him will be given a new spirit and will have everlasting life.
It is so simple, yet so profound. Because of the sacrifice I am brought back to God. Because of the sacrifice I am a new creation. Because of the sacrifice I am a joint heir with Christ and all His inheritance. There is nothing I could do that would ever earn this for me. It’s offered freely to all who come to Him.
