In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning.
Jesus Christ did not come into existence at the virgin birth by Mary. He already existed from the foundations of the universe with God and in God – because he IS God.
Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.
Jesus is being identified with the creator here. Think back to the book of Genesis, the very first chapter and verse states “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” However we could just as easily say “In the beginning Jesus created the heavens and the earth.” Jesus was God and is God and he made all things.
In him was life, and that life was the light of men.
The Word of God is full of life. The Word of God IS life. Jesus Christ is full of life. Jesus Christ IS life.
The life of the Word serves as the light for men. Jesus Christ is the life that shines as a light for all men.
When you are near the source of light, things are illuminated so that you can see and when you can see you can understand.
What happens if you move away from the source of light? The light grows dimmer and dimmer until you are so far from the light that you are in darkness.
The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.
Since the world has been separated from God it has been separated from the light – the world is in darkness. Jesus, who is light, came to shine the light of life in the darkness of this world, but the world which is in darkness does not understand it.
There came a man who was sent from God; his name was John. He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all men might believe. He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.
I take on the same role as John. I am not the light but I am a witness to the light. My life will be spent pointing to the One who is the light of the world. I will give my life to teaching others about the One who IS life.
Draw near to Jesus Christ and let his light illuminate your life.
