It can be very easy to live for the here and now.
Growing up on earth, it’s all we’ve ever known – so it seems only natural that we live with the earth in mind. However the Bible tells us that there is so much more to life than the here and now. There is so much more than what we can see, touch, taste or smell.
No, no we do not cease living after death if we are in Christ but we have a great beyond that stretches out forever and ever. An eternity of life abundant and that is what we are living for!
It is such a tragedy then, when people live with only the earth in mind.
We build savings accounts, invest in stock portfolios, hire financial advisers to plan for our retirement.
We invest overtime into rising up the corporate ladder, we sacrifice time with our friends and family so that we can secure a higher position, better pay, bigger bonuses.
We buy luxurious houses, fancy cars, new gadgets and we invest in the here and now….because after all, we only live once!
At least that’s what the world believes.
Why then do Christians get caught up in this same trap? Why have Christians become so earthly minded?
I mentioned that it’s a tragedy when the world lives this way – but it’s an even greater tragedy when Christians live this way.
You see this eternity that we’re living for is priceless. Jesus compared it to a treasure!
44 “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.
The man in this short parable found a treasure of incredible value. So he sold everything that he owned in order to go buy this field with the treasure.
Why then have Christians become so earthly minded? Because they don’t understand the value of the treasure buried in this field!
Instead of selling all they own in order to invest in this field that contains an incredible treasure, people would rather invest in the here and now – they would rather invest in what they can taste, touch and see.
In order to start investing in eternity we have to grasp the value of eternity. It would have made no sense for this man to sell everything he had if the value of the hidden treasure was LESS than the value of everything he sold – but that is not the case! This treasure is so valuable, so incredible, so worthwhile that the only thing that made sense was to invest in this field at all costs.
When people begin to realize the value of eternity, they will begin to shift their focus from earthly things to eternal things.
When we begin to understand the value of eternity, we too will sell all we have in order to invest in the field of eternity.
The real joy comes in realizing that eternal life, life abundant, life with our king – does not begin some day. It is not some far off thing that begins when we die – it begins the moment you surrender to Jesus Christ, it begins THIS day! And once you’ve surrendered to Christ, the quicker you understand the value of eternity, the better – because eternity can be invested in.
It is foolishness to surrender to Christ but to continue investing in the here and now. Instead, sell all your earthly possessions and invest it into eternity. The treasure that is hidden in the eternal is far beyond anything you will have on earth.
Invest in Eternity.
