The Beatles sang “All you need is love, love is all you need!” It was a seed planted as a mantra that grew into a full ideology which the world subscribes to. The world would have you believe that love is all you need – that love is enough to carry us through this life and into the next – that love is our salvation. The world worships this idea of love and has turned it into their god – but this is idolatry.
This teaching has even infiltrated the church and has become a pervasive heresy; That it doesn’t matter what you believe, or what religion you are – if you are a good and loving person you will be saved and go to heaven.
I’m here to tell you the truth – Love is not enough, Love is not all you need, and love is not salvation! Being a good and loving person will not get you into heaven.
However the good news is that salvation was made possible through the ultimate act of love!
“God loved the world so much that He gave His only Son, so that whoever believes in (trusts in, clings to, relies on) Him, will not perish but have eternal life.”
Love is the motivating force that brought us salvation, but love itself cannot save us. John 3:16 is such an awesome verse because it simplifies exactly what people need for salvation – to believe in, trust in, cling to and rely on Jesus Christ.
The perfect divine love of God wills the greatest good for our life and even motivates God to achieve it in us – but unless we choose to accept His sacrifice (His provision for salvation motivated by love) that love is meaningless and His will for your life is unrealized.
We cannot separate Jesus Christ from love and we cannot separate love from Jesus Christ. When we take love alone as an idea and glorify it as the means to salvation for all the world, we separate it from Jesus Christ and neuter the truth. However if we surrender our lives to Christ we become new creations, washed in the blood of His sacrifice and sealed with His Holy Spirit. In this new state we are capable of tapping into the divine love of God and free to let it flow from us like a river. It is only this love that we experience and share in Christ that has any lasting value. Know that salvation frees us to love – love does not free us to salvation.
Love separated from Christ and trusted on it’s own is a works based salvation and the Word makes it clear that no one can be saved by their works.
“It is by grace you have been saved through faith, and not of your own doing but it is the gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast.”
Faith in Christ is the only faith that brings salvation. If you place your faith in being a loving person then you are attempting to earn your way into heaven by your own merits, and you will come up short – Love alone is not enough. Instead, place your faith in Jesus Christ, trust in Him, cling to Him, rely on Him and He will provide you with access to an eternal love that you have never known before – and He alone will be enough.
